Here's a great website with information for you and your family put together by Michael Bluejay in Austin.

Finding the best route to school by bike (or walking)

1. Put your address into a Google search. Click on the map that comes up and then click on 'Directions'.  Now put your address in 'A' and the school name in 'B' and click the bicycle icon on top.

2. Alternately, you can use GO Boulder's bike mapping system by going to http://gistrans.ci.boulder.co.us/wwwGoBike/bikeroute/GoBikeBoulder.aspx

Biking to school provides older elementary and middle school children the opportunity to exercise in the fresh air, gain self confidence, learn the rules of the road, and improve the environment while reducing congestion and pollution around their schools. The number of kids who bike or walk to school in the US has fallen from nearly 50 percent in 1969 to 13 percent today. Nationwide, more than half of kids are driven to school in private cars.  Three quarters of these students live within a mile of school but only one quarter walk or ride a bike.

Parents cite safety as a prime concern, but by using proper equipment like a helmet, and a well adjusted bike, and finding and riding a safe route, biking to school can be safe and promote independence and responsibility.  Parents can also form Bike Trains. A Bike Train is a group of students biking to school together accompanied by adults. A Bike Train can be as simple as two families taking turns biking students to school, or a structured program with routes, a schedule and meeting locations. As the lead organizer for your school’s Bike Train, you can create a Bike Train that fits your school’s needs.
