SENG (Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted) Parent Discussion Groups

These groups are offered by the BVSD Office of Advanced Academic Services each year for parents of TAG students

SENG helps parents gain a better understanding of their gifted children and provides tools to work with them more effectively. It gives parents the opportunity to look at their child from new  perspectives and helps them gain insight into their childs motivations. It also provides a forum for sharing experiences with other parents of gifted children. The result is more confidence and responsiveness for parents, validation and support for children and a happier and a better connected family!

SESSION TOPICS: Topics will include:  Identification/Characteristics, Parent Relationships, Sibling Relationships, Communication of Feelings, Stress Management, Depression, Motivation, Tradition Breaking, Peer Relationships, and Discipline. For more information on SENG, go to www.sengifted.org

COST: The sessions are free to parents of Boulder Valley Students. The only fee is the cost of the book you select: Guiding The Gifted Child by Webb, Tolan and Meckstroth ($18), A Parent's Guide To Gifted Children by Webb, Gore, et. al ($25), or the BVSD booklet that succinctly outlines topics and concepts we'll be discussing each week (Free). You can choose the book you want to purchase at the first meeting. Scholarships are available to cover the cost of the book.

Junior Great Books Volunteer Programs
Interpretive Reading and Discussion for grades K-12

The Junior Great Books program benefits both students and adult leaders. As a volunteer, you will have the chance to work directly with students. Your own enthusiasm for literature and for sharing ideas will foster students’ love of literature and learning.

Volunteers usually meet with students once a week for six to twelve weeks to lead them in Shared Inquiry Discussions. It is the students’ responsibility to read the stories to prepare for discussion. (Younger students often have their parents read to them.) Sessions are typically scheduled for between a half hour and an hour. Volunteers will be required to spend some time each week reading the selection and preparing questions for discussion.

Visit the Great Books Foundation Website

The Great Books Foundation discussion groups, "Shared Inquiry," and discussions led as "Socratic Seminar," are quite similar. Training in either method will support the other, not be in conflict, and will lead to higher level discussion of challenging texts.
