Welcome to Boulder Valley School District

Dr. Chris King Hello,

My name is Chris King, and I am proud to be the new superintendent of the Boulder Valley School District. I have lived and worked in the district for many years, and I look forward to being a visible and accessible leader for our schools for many years to come.

BVSD has developed a New Century Graduate profile. This profile has shaped our curriculum as it identified the knowledge and skills that our community believes are critical in achieving the vision of BVSD graduates “who have the knowledge, skills and personal characteristics that will make this world a safer, more thoughtful and more inclusive place in which to live.”

BVSD is among the very highest achieving of Colorado’s 178 school districts. Our district ranked first in Colorado in both the number of schools rated “Excellent” and the number of “John J. Irwin Schools of Excellence,” (top eight percent of Colorado schools) as determined by the Colorado Department of Education for the 2005-2006 school year.

These ratings and awards are based on how high students score on the Colorado Student Assessment Program (CSAP) and ACT tests. While using CSAP scores is one way to rate our schools, we believe there are other, equally important measures of the value our schools add to their students’ educations. BVSD looks at how effective schools are at improving student performances year to year.  Most of our schools that are not rated “Excellent” do a fine job of moving students from one category to the next. Additionally, BVSD annually surveys students and staff regarding the climate in their schools to help us monitor and improve schools’ student-student and student-adult interactions.

To make certain that each district school more closely reflects the socioeconomic composition of our broader community, BVSD has committed to a phased process of socioeconomic destratification of certain schools that do not currently reflect community demographics based on federal poverty indicators. In 2007-2008, BVSD will continue to roll out the second phase of this plan.

In November 2006, BVSD voters generously approved a $296.8 million bond issue for renovation in every building in the district. BVSD is well into the first of three phases of project implementation. Phase I includes projects in 18 BVSD schools and four BVSD charter schools as well as a playground master plan and the design and construction of a district-wide wide area network.

Thank you for your interest the Boulder Valley School District – home of the New Century Graduate.

Sincerely,

Christopher King, Ph.D.
Superintendent
