Description: Hear inspiring speakers, experience diverse workshops, and enjoy an opportunity for intergenerational exchange with participants from 7 states. Speakers include Judy Shepard from the Matthew Shepard Foundation; Jody Huckaby, Executive Director of National PFLAG; Mara Kiesling, Executive Director of the National Center for Transgender Equality; and Dr. Miguel de la Torre, Professor of Ethics at Iliff School of Theology. This conference has been approved by BVSD for 15 hours of CDE credit.

Creating Caring Communities: Bully-Proofing Your School

Description: Workshop participants will be prepared to train their building staff on the "Bully-Proofing Your School" program. The morning session summarizes Bully-Proofing strategies and concepts, and the afternoon session covers curriculum application. Training includes materials, strategies, demonstrations, interventions, curriculum, and time for developing a school action plan. This train-the-trainer workshop is appropriate for elementary, middle, and high school teachers; counselors; social workers; administrators; and staff. This workshop has been approved by BVSD for 7 ½ hours of CDE credit. A limited number of subs will be available for BVSD teachers through the SAPP Office.

Identifying & Meeting the Needs of Questioning, Transgendered, Bisexual, Lesbian and Gay Youth

Description: This in-service is appropriate for middle and high school teachers, coaches, counselors, social workers, psychologists, and administrators. Participants will learn how to handle harassment in school settings; how to create a safe environment for all youth to learn; QTBLG student issues in our schools; and QTBLG identity development. Lunch will be provided on-site. This workshop has been approved by BVSD for 7 ½ hours of CDE credit. A limited number of subs will be available for BVSD teachers through the SAPP Office.

9 Essential Skills for the Love & Logic Classroom

Dates: Mondays, September 29 - December 8, 2008
Location: Coal Creek Elementary School, Library
Time: 4:30 PM - 6:00 PM

Description: This course follows the educator training program titled 9 Essential Skills for the Love and Logic Classroom developed by Jim Fay and Charles Fay Ph.D. The program consists of nine separate modules, each of which teaches a different subset of skills. Each subset is taught through a variety of media, including video presentation, selected readings, and structured group exercises and discussions. This class has been approved by BVSD for 13 ½ hours of CDE credit. Class does not meet October 6th and November 24th.
Other Information: The cost of the class for BVSD teachers is a $15 materials fee, payable to the instructor at the first meeting. One semester hour of graduate credit through Chapman University is available at an additional cost for teachers completing all 9 class modules. Participants choosing university credit will not receive CDE credits from BVSD.
