What is SAAC?

The Student Accountability Advisory Committee (SAAC) is a group of high school students that work directly with the Board of Education on student issues. At every Board meeting is a time spot entitled "student communication." During this time, SAAC representatives speak and give presentations directly to the Board on any issue which SAAC believes warrants the attention and affect students directly, as well as get direction from the Board and respond to questions posed by Board members on student issues or views.

SAAC represents the more than 9,200 high school students in the Boulder Valley School District on a level which is not matched by teachers nor parents. It is a group which has influenced decisions that directly impact students, such as the suspension / expulsion policies, enacting weighted grades in BVSD, increasing credits given for school sports, and much more.

The purpose of SAAC is to give all students a greater voice in the decisions that affect them and their educations. We seek to improve communication between students and administration, the School Board, Superintendent, DAC, and teachers. We especially seek to include students who have felt left out of the governance process. Any interested students are welcome to join SAAC.

How Does it Work?

SAAC is a tool for students – it is a way to bring important issues up and enact change on district-wide student issues. The way this occurs is through “Student Communication” at every Board meeting: SAAC representatives attend Board meetings to discuss directly with Board members student issues. This direct link between students and the Board ensures that the voices of students are heard and that issues seen throughout the district are dealt with more effectively.

SAAC is organized with two students from every high school in the district to represent their school, although it is open to any who wish to join us for an evening. Meetings begin at 7 pm, and typically end around 8 pm, although they may run longer depending on the agenda. They are scheduled throughout the school year on the first and third Tuesday of each month, alternating weeks with Board meetings. SAAC meets at the Boulder Valley Education Center (6500 Arapahoe Rd, Boulder, CO 80303) in the Superintendent's Conference Room. Upcoming meetings for the 2008-2009 school year are: December 2nd, January 20, February 3rd and 17th, March 3rd, 17th, and 31st April 7th and 21st, May 5th and 19th
