 Platt Program Characteristics


Nevin Platt Middle School houses two distinct middle school programs, a traditional neighborhood middle school and CHOICE, an experiential program that offers a multi-age, three-year program. Both programs adhere to the state and district curricular standards; however, the instructional strategies vary.

Platt offers the following advantages to accommodate Academic Excellent, Social Growth and Developmentally appropriate activities. Teachers collaborate in interdisciplinary teams with the advantage of better supporting high expectations for all learners and challenging curricular offerings.

Flexible block scheduling

Advisor-advisee period in the day that supports students in character-building,

organization, team building

Support systems through teams, counselors and administrators who meeting daily to

communicate student’s needs

Rich array of elective classes that include foreign languages, applied technology, drama,

art, band, and orchestra

Investment in communication networks with families and students

Students are encouraged to be independent thinkers and responsible learners as they make the important transition to high school and beyond



CHOICE Focus Program

This highly-sought, innovative program is an experiential-based model that includes the following components:

alternative evaluations, portfolios, presentations, goal setting

multi-grade grouping—grades 6-8

community involvement

advisory group, Co-op.

academic discovery, hands-on activities

two curriculum-rich fall and spring trips

rich array of elective classes that include foreign languages, applied technology, drama, art, band, and orchestra

Student-led conferences with portfolio presentations culminate the use of assignment rubrics, self-assessment and individual goal setting

Nevin Platt Middle School is committed to providing balance in offering student opportunities to participate in a variety of activities and athletics.
