Academic Enrichment Opportunities

September:

Math Olympiads - meets Monday mornings at 7:45 in the TAG room. Open to 4th or 5th graders (and the occasional talented 3rd grader) who have an interest and enthusiasm for mathematics. This is an "advanced enrichment" program for those who already feel competent in math and want to stretch their boundaries. The first class meets Monday, September 14th.  If interested, just show up!

October:

Chess Team - meets Thursday afternoons from 3:05 until 4:15 in the TAG room. Mesa's team is composed of advanced chess players in grades 3 through 5 who desire to play more and compete against other students in the District. The first meeting will be held on October 1st.  If interested, just show up!

Knowledge Bowl - will meet Thursday mornings in the TAG room at 7:45. Open to 5th grade TAG students, the Mesa team learns to work together as they prepare to compete in a national academic competition, via school computers. Questions go beyond rote learning and test both application and analysis of information.

Destination Imagination (D.I.) - an evening meeting for interested parents will be held during the last week of October to explain D.I. and answer questions about the program. Destination Imagination is a creativity program for students that teaches problem solving strategies, teamwork, and life-long skills. Students form grade level teams and then work together to solve both team and instant challenges. Teams spend several months in preparation for a spring competition/presentation. The informational meeting date will be announced in Mesa's September newsletter.

November:

Chess Club - meets Tuesday afternoons from 3:15 to 4:15 in the school library. Chess Club runs from late November until Spring Break and is open to students of all ability levels. Each meeting involves a fun lesson as well as time devoted to playing the game.

January:

Junior Great Books - meets during the school day, beginning in January. This parent-lead activity allows small, grade-level groups to meet for the purpose of in-depth discussions on stories they have read.

February:

Spelling Bee - A school spelling bee, organized by grade level, is held this month. One student will be selected to represent Mesa at the District/Regional spelling bee.

Opportunities for Parents of TAG Students

We would like to call your attention to a wonderful website available for parents of TAG students: www.bvgt.org.  It is not sponsored by the school district, but rather affiliated with the Colorado Association for Gifted and Talented. We highly recommend that you regularly check it for updates on resources available within the community. Here you will find information about upcoming speakers, support classes for parents, local events/opportunities for children and families.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me.
