Writing, Writing, WritingWe are continuing to write like mad. They have just begun working on Family stories. We are really focusing on 3 important writing skills: Capitals at the beginning of a sentence and names. Periods at the end of a sentences, and finger spacing between words. As you go on winter break, please have your child write a sentence or two every day about what they've done that day. Help them with the 3 writing skills listed above. We will read these aloud in class when we get back and they may earn a prize from our prize box. | Long Vowels and Silly Stories2nd grade has begun a phonemic awareness lesson working on long vowels. We have worked on long a, o, and i. As you read together at home have them point out the long vowel words. We have also been reading and writing silly stories. They have written a Silly Animal Story and a My Little Brother/sister silly story. Remember to have your child write in their journal at home every evening. Reading Comprehension and Silly Stories3rd grade has been reading the Box Car Children and working on comprehension strategies. We have practiced scanning to find information, making connections, predicting, and asking question as we read. We have also been working on Silly Stories. They are in the process of writing a silly story about their brother or sister. | Mysteries and VowelsWe are continuing our unit on mysteries. We are using background knowledge, word skills, and predicting to figure out the mini mysteries that we are reading. We have also begun a lesson on long and short vowels. We have finished up short vowel sound and will begin long vowels after Thanksgiving break. | ShilohWe have begun to read our Newbury award winner Shiloh. We are using a tape of the book to help with our fluency. We are then using predicting, connections, and questioning to help us comprehend the story. We are answering comprehension questions about the story and are writing summaries about the chapters we have read. | Sight Words and guided reading booksWe are continuing to work on our sight words and are reading stories to support these words. We have also begun working on Guided reading. Right now we are working on picture vocabulary and sight words in these books. |
