At Coal Creek Elementary, programming
options for students involve the child, teacher, and parent(s).
Currently, the classroom teacher is the primary person to
deliver instruction in targeted areas of the curriculum at
the rate and level needs of the student, to the greatest extent
possible. Because our teachers use classroom differentiation
techniques to help students work towards their potential,
instructional delivery may look slightly different for each
child. For example, we use math and literacy blocks at some
grade levels to group the students so that acceleration through
the curriculum can occur. Teachers may also encourage students
to pursue individual projects in such manner that stretches
and enriches their learning on a particular topic area; this
often occurs in the areas of science or the social studies.
Students may elect to participate in various school-wide
activities to challenge their learning. Examples of these
include our “Where in the World?” challenge, the
Geography and Spelling Bees, Golden Oldies and/or Instrumental
Music options at the intermediate level, intramurals with
our Physical Education teachers, participation in Student
Council, Destination Imagination, and the Coal Creek Science
Fair. This year, we also hope to have “mentors”
volunteer their time and energy in working with selected students
within their areas of interest or specialty. We also encourage
parents to pursue educational opportunities for their child
outside of Coal Creek, such as in learning a foreign language,
dance / drama / athletic groups, scouting, and learning opportunities
geared to elementary-age students through the local colleges
and universities. The BVSD TAG link found on this page is
updated on a regular basis and provides additional information
on these types of events and offerings.

Dates to Remember:
Destination Imagination
Destination Imagination is a program that teaches students
great skills, such as teamwork creative problem solving out-of-the-box
thinking, the art of negotiating and compromise, and strategic
life skills. Team members also deal with different personalities,
deadlines, rules, budget constraints and peer pressure.
This program is open to children in kindergarten through college.
Teams choose one of five creative challenges and spend several
months developing a solution, which they present at local
and regional tournaments.
