Philosophy & Rational in Art Education, K-12
Education in the visual arts is a basic part of a comprehensive education. By creating visual art forms one is better able to express his/her most intimate thoughts and feelings and can communicate them to others. Image making gives rise to ideas, invention and imagination. While making art, students must deal with ambiguity, become flexible in their opinions and learn to make judgments. Through viewing and discussing the art work of great artists they learn about larger human concerns and promote better understanding among people. Making art and learning to understand the art work of others extends their language, deepens their thinking and makes them more complete human beings. The art program involves the students, the teachers and the parents. It extends into the school, the home and community.
The elementary art program introduces skills and experiences that build a foundation for art expression, knowledge about art, art criticism and visual literacy. The program capitalizes on students' enthusiasm for discovery and inventiveness, and their need for development of social and communication skills. An interdisciplinary approach is emphasized in establishing awareness of art and its place in our cultural heritage. At each grade level, emphasis will be on certain areas of art knowledge and skill learning. Students will be introduced to and provided with the opportunity to experience a variety of media, processes and art techniques. Study of at least two great artists from various time periods and cultures will be introduced at each grade level.
