Pack your bags! You are about to embark on a virtual field trip to the Middle East in order to become an expert on one of the three major religions that began in that area of the world. When you return from your travels you will share your knowledge with the rest of your group and find the similarities and differences amongst the religions you studied.
You will be divided into groups of three. Each of you will visit a different holy city and study the religion that originated there. If you go to Mecca you will study Islam. Those of you travelling to Bethlehem will study Christianity and the rest of you will visit Jerusalem and study Judaism.
While you are travelling you will create and write a postcard from your city that will highlight the main points of that city's culture and religion. Your goal will be to share an understanding of the faith you have studied.
Your postcard will include at least one picture from the city, and information on the culture of this area as well as the main points of your religion.
Be sure to include:
- A major Religious Shrine
- Religious Feast Day or Holy Day including its history and the time of year it occurs
- A special custom or tradition for your faith
- Role of women practicing your faith
- Symbols that represent your faith
Once you have finished your postcards, you will work with your group members to create a Venn Diagram showing the similarities and differences between the religions.
The Venn Diagram that your group will create displays a broader understanding and should include:
- Origin of the religion
- Basic beliefs
- Names of the holy books
- Name of the places of worship
- Items used during worship or ceremonies
- Three important holy days
- Interesting facts not included in your postcards but relevant to your religions
How do you say goodbye in the language of the religious group in the city you are visiting? Close your postcard using that language.
