WELCOME TO 7TH GRADE!!

Updated September 9, 2009

Dear Families,

We hope you all had a nice long weekend.  Next Tuesday is school picture day.  The order form has gone home already so if you haven't seen it check the black hole known as a middle school backpack.  Their pictures will be taken during their PE/Health class.

We have had a lot of kids miss school already this year so please remind your child it is their responsibility to meet with their teacher and make up the work.  We have been working hard to make sure all students know their log in and password for Infinite Campus so hopefully they are using that resource to keep track of their work as well.

On Friday, a pink sheet of paper will come home asking you to confirm that you have been on Parent Portal and are informed about your student’s grades.  Please sign and return the form to let us know that you are checking on line, OR if you are unable to check grades online and need paper copies sent home periodically.

Math-Felknor

Math this week:

M15 students have spent time updating planners, recording upcoming assignments and assessments. We have also discussed how to use planners as a guide to setting up a study plan.  Topics discussed this week include add/subtract/multiply/divide integers and measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode).  The SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT** for Chapter 1 is scheduled for next week's BLOCK days.

M25 students have also spent time updating planners and discussed strategies for studying and managing homework time with other scheduled activities.  Topics for this week include properties of numbers and review for our SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT ** for Chapter 1 scheduled for this Friday, September 11.

** All students should be checking Infinite Campus on a regular basis, making sure to turn in missing work by the Summative Assessment date.

The Colorado Math Circle offers math talks and problem solving sessions throughout the year to advanced high school and middle school students interested in expanding their knowledge of mathematics. Teachers and parents are welcome too.

You are invited to attend a math circle meeting where they will meet students from around the state who are fascinated by the world of mathematics. For more information visit our website at http://www.coloradomath.org/

The Colorado Math Circle is sponsored by the Department of Applied Mathematics and Outreach Committee of the University of Colorado at Boulder. All meetings are free and take place on the CU-Boulder campus.

Social Studies-Herbstreit

Test on Monday, September 14 over culture, economic systems, human geography, and forms of government.
On block day we played a form of Jeopardy as a review and each student now has a packet of information with all the test questions from which to study.  I don't usually have tests on Monday but many students already had math and LA tests for this Friday so I moved mine to Monday.  Students have been encouraged to study a little each night instead of cramming it all in on Sunday night.

Language Arts-Caskie-Johnson

Life Science-Estes

This Week in Science:

This week we are learning about the scientific process and how scientist use inquiry to investigate a problem or question.  Students will be designing an experiment in their lab groups and presenting their ideas to the class.  Students will not need to perform the experiment so they can be as creative as they would like.  The objective is to use good science inquiry and develop a testable hypothesis and procedure.

***Late work policy-

 In an attempt to reduce the number of assignment not turned in by students;

-100% of credit and no parent signature for assignments turned in one day late.  Things happen, assignments are left on tables or in cars.  I will not deduct points for this type of situation.

-All late assignments turned in after the one day grace period (not due to absence) must have a parent signature on the blue slip attached to the assignment.  Students will fill out the blue slip while we are going over the assignment and will need to bring it home for a signature.  If the assignment is turned in the next day, again, they can get 100% credit.  If assignments are more than one day late they will receive 75% of the credit they earn on the assignment.

-I am encouraging students to keep up, ask questions, and get help when needed so they don’t have to worry about late work.
