Thal – Art - Quite a few students have not paid their art fees. Students will not be allowed to continue using art supplies if these fees are not paid. Fees were due  Fri. 8/28/09. 7th & 8th grade fees are $20.00 a semester, and 6th grade fees are $15.00 a trimester. Please send cash or check payable to S.H.M.S.

6th Grade – Expl.

We just finished our drawing and painting unit. The students did an excellent job. Look for these projects to come home soon. A few pieces will be displayed in the school and will be returned at the end of the trimester.

We are starting tissue paper fish kites today. The kites will be finished by the end of next week. Watch for a colorful display of fish in the coming weeks.

Parents, thank you for the prompt payment of art fees, all students have paid their fees!

Art 1

Art 1 students finished their drawing unit last week. We worked with a variety of drawing mediums discovering drawing techniques and the creation of form shadow and highlights with each new medium. Grades are in IC and most work will be coming home as it was handed back to students last Friday. A few pieces are on display in the building.

Periods 3 & 6 - We have just finished a clay project and will be glazing our pieces in a couple of weeks. While our clay is drying and being fired we will be working on paper mache birds. Two very fun projects! Both projects will be finished by the middle of October.

Period 5 - We have been working on the paper mache bird project for the past week and will start the clay project in October. We will finish both projects by mid October.

3-D Crafts

Students just finished their Japanese inspired lacquer vases. We had a critique on Monday in which all students shared and commented on their projects. They did an excellent job and were proud of their work. These will be on display and will come home in a few weeks.

We are starting on small wooden chairs today. Always a favorite project!

·     We're starting to run low on tissues.  If you have any extras, please bring them in.

Ray – Choir - "Students received permission slips to attend Fairview's student matinee of "42nd Street" on November 10.  It will run from 9:30 to around noon.  Students are not required to attend, but they do need to make up work they may miss from first, second, and third periods. I have asked students to bring a sack lunch to school that day, since we never know exactly when we'll get back for lunch.  In order to attend, I need their signed permission slips by October 13, and they must have turned in their Choir Expectations signature sheets, as well.  You can check on IC to see if that's turned in. "

6th choir

Group chaperones to look for in the student center/courtyard on November 10:

last name A through F:  Mrs. Fort

last name G through M:  Mrs. Mark-Bachus (Rebekah's mom) and Mrs. Bernadier(Emmas' mom)

last name N through Z:  Mrs. Ray

Remember that your 6th grade concert is on December 9 at 6:00.  You must be in the choir room at 5:40 in concert dress:

all black for girls, below the knee; black trousers for boys with white button-down shirt and dark tie.  All:  dark shoes and socks/hose.

Start memorizing words and notes to all concert songs; progress checks are coming up.  The 6th grade choirs are developing a nice sound; keep it up!

7th / 8th choir

Group Chaperones to look for in the student center/courtyard on November 10:

last name A through M:  Mrs. Leeberg (Kelsey's mom) and Mrs. Bucy (Maddie Haimes' mom)

last name N through Z:  Mrs. North (Abbi and Ali's mom) and Jewell Lauer (Camille's mom)

The Fairview cluster festival is coming up on November 17.  Students need to be in the Fairview big gym at 5:45 to rehearse; the concert starts at 7:00.  Your original schedule sheet says 6-8.  Please adjust accordingly.

We will have a one-time joint reheasal after school on December 7 in the auditorium from 3:45 to 4:45.  This will be our one chance to have both 7/8 classes on stage and figure out placement, balance and blend, etc. THIS IS NOT ON YOUR ORIGINAL SCHEDULE SHEET, so please mark it on your calendars!  Dress is same as below.

The December concert for 7/8 is on December 8 at 7:00.  Kids need to be here at 6:40 in concert dress, which is all black for everyone, below the knee (boys are black trousers, black button down shirt, and a dark tie.) Dark shoes and socks/hose for all.

The 7/8 groups are really sounding lovely; I can't wait to hear them all together!

All Choir Groups

Our field trip to see Fairview's production of 42nd Street is coming up on Tuesday, November 10.  Students who have turned in a signed permission slip will be called down to the student center/courtyard (depending on weather) to check in with their chaperone at 9:10.  (I will list group chperones under individual classes.) Students do not have to sit with their chaperones, but they need to check in with them before we leave for Fairview and before we return to SHMS. Students will return around 12:00, and I have asked that they bring a sack lunch to SHMS that day so they can eat quickly and return to class no matter what time we return.

Individual solo/ensemble auditions for the December concerts are coming up on November 17 and 18, during choir classes.  We have discussed this thoroughly in class, including the fact that the auditions must be performance-ready and with appropriate accompaniment.

All groups are sounding really nice!
