School governance is a cooperative effort involving administrators, faculty, parents, and students working together to set program goals, devise strategies for meeting those goals, and conducting and reporting the results of program evaluations. Key groups include:

School Improvement Team (SIT)
This committee is composed of parents, faculty, and administrators who are responsible for day-to-day operating decisions. DMT/SIT meets monthly. Under state law, the School Improvement Team, in collaboration with the community as a whole, is responsible for setting broad improvement goals for the school and developing and implementing programs for achieving those goals. Parents are invited and encouraged to participate in the activities of SIT and its subcommittees—student achievement, attendance and graduation, cultural diversity, and instructional technology.

Parent-Teacher Organization
The PTO organizes many special events which strengthen the school community, recognizes the academic achievement of students, and provides students with the social events which make school more enjoyable. A critical PTO function is to raise funds that are used to support education through a variety of mini-grants.

Volunteer Programs
Southern Hills has an extensive volunteer program with mentoring and tutoring opportunities, parent classroom assistants, special presentations, and parent support with supervision, office and library tasks. In addition to providing valuable services which the school could not otherwise afford, the program also fosters a cooperative, joint working relationship between parents and staff with frequent communication on a personal level. It also provides parents with an opportunity for extensive and meaningful involvement in their childrens' education.
