Accomplishments from the 2007 – 2008 School Year

Creative Alliance Grants Awarded

"The Creative Alliance”, a Lafayette public relations and marketing firm, presented mini-grants to six schools in the Boulder Valley School District through its spring 2008 Kids Need Arts Program. Of those six grants, Lafayette Elementary received three —one $100 grant to Mrs. Lynn Williams,1st grade teacher, and two $75 grants to Mrs. Ginger Thom and Ms. Jennifer Shepherd, art teachers!

Youth Art Show Winners

The Lafayette Cultural Arts Commission has chosen twenty-four pieces of artwork from Lafayette Elementary School to become banners that will hang on Public Road in Old Town. Artwork was chosen from the Youth Art Show at the Oatmeal Festival in January. Twenty-one pieces were from art classes at LES and three were from the Photography Club. Congratulations to Dominica Quesada, Erika Schunk, Tiana Smith, Connor Stephan, Annabel Stewart, Gwen Tisinai, Bridget Toll, Aly Zupan, Kalei Beauford, Morgan Benedict, Julie Rumer, Riley Geldean, Shane Hambleton, Almut Herzfeldt, Nicole Hernandez, Alexis Kiechlin, Jack Kiechlin, Crystal Krahl, Amy Lopez, Alexia Merrill, Jack Merrill, Marek Newton and Julia Olsen.

Congratulations to the National Geographic Bee School Level Participants

The 4th grade participants are Sophie Bilello, Jackson Burgesser, Yancey Gonzales, Almut Herzfeld Mayer, Dylan Keith, Erin Keith, Kyle Wager, Grant Hambleton, Justin Krawetz, Nathan Kuykendall, Tray Guess, Orion Harpe, Nicole Jacobsen, Lauren Matheny and Olivia Schmich.  The 5th grade participants are Hunter Baeza, John Bellman, Josef Brockish, Sam Cuthbertson, Crystal Krahl, Justin Montoya, Arjun Ramcharansingh, Tyger Roch, Bridget Toll, Annalise Wilson, Landon Baxter, Kristen Hensley, Aynsley Jessip and Lyndsie Sundvall.

These students will be competing for the title of Lafayette Elementary Geographic Bee Champion on Thursday, January 17, 2008 at 9:30 am.

Chess Club Competition Results

The Chess Club's match with Peak to Peak was close! The score ended Peak to Peak 4 1/2 and Lafayette 3 1/2.

The Chess Club played Superior Elementary for their second tournament of the season. The team from Lafayette beat their opponent soundly by a score of Lafayette 11 Superior 3.

Way to go Chess Team!


Accomplishments from the 2006 – 2007 School Year

Destination Imagination Wins 2nd Place at State and Earns a Spot at the Global Finals!

The Precocious Pink Panthers, representing Lafayette Elementary School are on their way to Knoxville, Tennessee.  The seven-member team of fourth and fifth grade girls took part in the Destination Imagination State Tournament Saturday, April 28 at the University of Denver.  These girls placed second in their division earning them a trip to the Global Finals hosted by the University of Tennessee, scheduled for May 22-26.

Destination Imagination Competition Results

All Destination Imagination teams from Lafayette Elementary School did an amazing job at the DI competition on Saturday, April 14th, 2007. The results are: three of the "Rising Star" teams received outstanding comments from the judges, “CSI-DI” received a perfect score on "Gadget", “Direct Flight” had a successful flight that soared through the gym, and "Round about Courage" achieved 3rd place! In addition, "Switching Traditions" received 2nd place! They will proceed to the state competition at DU on April 28th. Good luck to you! WHAT GREAT PERFORMANCES! CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE!!
 

Julie Marquez Wins a Jared Polis Foundation Award

Congratulations to Julie Marquez for winning a well deserved award for being an exemplary teacher!  The teachers will be honored at the Teacher Recognition Awards Ceremony on May 10, 2007 at the Butterfly Pavilion.  You can see all the winners here!
 

Boulder Valley K— 8 Art Show

The following students from Lafayette Elementary were selected to display their art work in the Boulder Valley K-8 Art Show! Congratulations to Cynthia Thomas (K), Chloe Stemm (K), Sara Reichen (3rd), Laura Matheny (3rd), Tiana Gaetano (4th), Tiana Smith (4th), and Sarah Ramirez (5th).  Their work will be on display at the Boulder Valley Public Library/Canyon Gallery from April 6th thru May 2nd, 2007.
 

Super School News Team 2007

Congratulations to the team of students who created a broadcast of Lafayette Elementary’s Super School Newscast on Rocky Mountain PBS Channel 6. The show was broadcast from Sunday, February 18, 2007 through Saturday, February 24, 2007. The students representing Lafayette Elementary's Super School News Team 2007 were:

Siena Ruggeri Wins Lafayette Elementary Geographic Bee

Moves One Step Closer to $25,000 College Scholarship

Lafayette, Colorado, January 11, 2007 – Siena Ruggeri a 5th grade student at Lafayette Elementary School won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on January 11, 2007 and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round of the 19th annual National Geographic Bee. The Bee is sponsored by the National Geographic Society.

The kickoff for this year’s Bee was the week of November 13, with thousands of schools around the United States and in the five U.S. territories participating. The school winners, including Siena Ruggeri, will now take a written test; up to 100 of the top scorers in each state will be eligible to compete in their state Bee March 30, 2007.
 
The National Geographic Society will provide an all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state champions and teacher- escorts to participate in the National Geographic Bee national championship on May 22 and 23, 2007. The first place national winner will receive $25,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership in the Society. “Jeopardy!” host, Alex Trebek, will moderate the national finals on May 23. The program will air on television. Check local listings for dates and times.

The staff and students at Lafayette Elementary would like to congratulate Siena on this tremendous accomplishment and wish her the best of luck as she tries to qualify for the state Bee on March 30.


Congratulations to all of the Reflections winners! Everyone did a great job, giving our judges a difficult time.

Our winners were: Nate Petersen,1st Place, Photography Primary; Paige Kiechlin, 1st Place Photography Intermediate; Dania Holmberg, 1st Place, Visual Primary; Eden Maddy, 2nd Place, Visual Primary; Michael Beshear, 3rd Place, Vis-ual Primary; Kelsea Krawetz,1st Place, Visual Intermediate; Hannah Montoya, 2nd Place, Visual Intermediate; Trey Puckett, 3rd Place, Visual Intermediate; Jack Merrill, 1st Place, Literature Primary; Eli Spice, 2nd Place, Literature Primary; Nathaniel Jager, 3rd Place, Literature Primary; Stewart Alexander “Alex” Miller, 1st Place, Literature Intermedi-ate; Alexis Kiechlin, 2nd Place, Literature Intermediate.

Their work is hanging in the hallway next to Mr. Meere's music room until December 6th. The work will then move to the Lafayette Public Library from December 8th until early January where it will be hung with winning works from other schools for the competition at the District level. Good Luck to all our students! Thank you again to all our judges! They truly enjoyed the experience.


Accomplishments from the 2005 – 2006 School Year

Lafayette Elementary Student Qualifies For State Level Of National Geographic Bee

Ben Johnson, a 5th grade student at Lafayette Elementary School, qualified to participate at the state level National Geographic Bee that will take place Friday, March 31, at the University of Denver. The National Geographic sent a letter to Lafayette School's Talented and Gifted Program Coordinator Julie Marquez last week alerting her to Johnson's successful qualification.

"Ben Johnson is an outstanding young man and Lafayette Elementary School is proud to have him representing our school in the State National Geographic Bee," said Marquez.

School winners from across the state of Colorado took a written test in November and the top 100 scorers qualified to move on to the state level of competition. One winner from each state competition will advance to the national competition May 23 and 24 at National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Lafayette Elementary School offers a variety of enrichment activities for K - 5th grade students including geography clubs in which students learn about the world around them through the study of maps and globes, interactive games, internet research, group discussions and current events. This was the first year Lafayette Elementary School had participated in the National Geographic Bee.

Congratulations Art Exhibitors

The following students have been chosen to represent Lafayette Elementary at the BVSD Art Exhibit displayed at the Boulder Valley Public Library.  The exhibit will run through the 30th of April.  Please make sure to make the visit to Boulder and check out all the great works of art!

Lafayette Elementary School Spelling Bee

Behrod Keshtavar, a 4th grade student at Lafayette Elementary School, won the school-level spelling bee competition Wednesday, January 25. The 2nd place winner of the bee was 5th grader, Jack Egan, and winning 3rd place was 3rd grader, Hunter Baeza.  The Annual Lafayette Elementary School Spelling Bee is an oral competition among 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students conducted in rounds until only one speller remains.

Out of 80 Lafayette Elementary School students participating in the preliminary round of the spelling bee, 10 students advanced to compete in the final school-level competition.  These students included Behrod Keshtavar, Jack Egan, and Hunter Baeza, along with 5th grade students, Ben Johnson and Jake Milford, 4th grade students Cameron Kelsey and Siena Ruggeri, and 3rd grade students, Julia Olsen, Justin Pruess, and Brandon Smith.  Alternates were 5th grader Haley Vero and 4th grader Breanna Ramos. All students received certificates of participation.

By winning the Lafayette Elementary School Spelling Bee, Behrod Keshtavar has qualified to compete in the Regional Spelling Bee Competition that will be held February 25, 2006 in the auditorium of Monarch High School in Louisville.

Lafayette Elementary School Geographic Bee

Ben Johnson, a 5th grade student at Lafayette Elementary School, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on Wednesday, January 11 and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship.  The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 18th annual National Geographic Bee.  Out of 40 Lafayette Elementary School students participating in the preliminary round, Ben Johnson, Kayla Bellitt, Carter Cumbo, Siena Ruggeri, Connor Denley, and Marcel Torrez advanced to compete in the finalist competition.  The Bee is sponsored by the National Geographic Society and JPMorgan Chase & Co., a leading global financial services firm with operations in more than 50 countries.

Mini-Grant Award Winners

Congratulations to Carolan Covington, 2nd grade; Marty Craghead, SPED; Julie Marquez, TAG and Janet Waller, 2nd grade.  These teachers were each awarded $600.00 from Impact On Education to support creative, innovative teaching opportunities in the classroom.  Congratulations!

 

Heritage Bank Funds Classroom Grant for Lafayette Elementary School

Marty Craghead, a para-educator at Lafayette Elementary School, received an education mini-grant funded by Heritage Bank for the 2005-6 school year. The grant, administered through Impact on Education—a community partnership for Boulder Valley Public Schools—benefits students directly at the classroom level.
