Young Writers Workshop at the Aspen Summer Words Writers Conference
Young Writers Workshop w/ Cerena Thomsen http://www.aspenwriters.org/faculty.html
Course Description: The Young Writers Workshop is for teenagers (ages 14-18) who are ready for an adventure in storytelling while making new friends. In this workshop, writers will play with free-writing to jumpstart creativity, brainstorm with other writers to find out how to make their stories better and discover what it takes to become a great writer. For the past eight years, Cerena Thomsen has been teaching at Aspen High School, where she earned the Teacher of Merit Award. Along with the standard literature courses for grades 10-12, her teaching credits include Creative Writing and Journalism. Currently, she advises the school literary magazine, NespaMerge. Her love for writing stems from her experience with the New Jersey Writing Project, where she first began using a workshop approach to learning and teaching writing. She has a passion for working with teenagers and helping them discover their voices. She resides in Aspen with her husband and two children.Unique in the world of literary events, We are accepting applications to the 2008 Writing Retreat and Literary Festival, from February 1 through April 1, or until all spots are filled. The number of places for the non-juried workshops (which the Young Writers Workshop IS) especially are limited, so we encourage early application and registration.
Aspen Summer Words offers two complementary programs designed to appeal to the writer and the reader in each of us:
• The Literary Festival, which is held in the afternoons and evenings, features a banquet of events such as author readings and talks for those who love all things literary, from discussing stories and ideas to learning more about the world of publishing.
• The Writing Retreat, which takes place in the mornings, offers inspiration, knowledge and opportunity in two- and five-day writing workshops and literature appreciation classes for students of the written word.

Legislative Update !
(from the website of the National Assoc. for Gifted Children)
Formula Grant Legislation Introduced:
Long-time gifted education supporter, Representative Elton Gallegly (CA-24), has introduced legislation to create a formula grant to states to support gifted and talented students. The bill, H.R. 2925 ( http://www.nagc.org/uploadedFiles/Advocacy/HR%202925%20(110.pdf), is similar to legislation Representative Gallegly and Senator Charles Grassley (Iowa) introduced in 2003.
The legislation builds on the grants and research developed through the Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Act by authorizing grants to state education agencies to distribute to local school districts, on a competitive basis, to support programs and services for gifted and talented students. Although the bill leaves specific spending priority decisions to the states, it authorizes spending in five key areas:
professional development to ensure that school personnel understand the educational needs of gifted students
innovative programs and services, including service learning
making materials and services available through state regional educational service centers, institutions of higher education, or other entities
challenging, high-level course work that utilizes emerging technologies, including distance learning, for individual students or groups of students
direct educational services and materials, including strategies designed to address the educational needs of gifted students such as curriculum compacting, acceleration, independent study, and dual enrollment
NAGC strongly supports the formula grant strategy as the most effective way to compensate for the inequitable and disproportionate application of gifted and talented education in this country. Click here to read the statement that NAGC is circulating to Congress about the formula grant proposal: http://www.nagc.org/uploadedFiles/Advocacy/Final%20legis%20prop%20(Javits%20formula%20grant).pdf
Fourteen state gifted education associations, along with NAGC and CEC, sent letters to Representative Gallegly endorsing H.R. 2925. We need your help to get cosponsors for the bill. Currently, there are eight cosponsors (none from Colorado), but we need additional Members of Congress to join Mr. Gallegly in order to show support for gifted learners. If your Representative is not a cosponsor of the bill yet, please urge him or her to cosponsor H.R. 2925 as a way to show support for high-ability learners. Be sure to include in your email or letter a brief summary of why federal financial support for gifted students can make a difference in your state and in your school district. U.S. mail and email addresses for every Representative is available at www.house.gov. Thank you for your assistance!
