The Advanced Placement Program (AP) is a
challenging academic program designed to
provide motivated high school students with
college-level academic courses. Established
in 1955 by the College Board, the AP Program
is a cooperative educational endeavor between secondary schools and colleges and
universities. High school students who complete AP courses demonstrate their mastery
of subject material by earning qualifying grades on AP Examinations. AP courses with
qualifying exam grades are accepted for credit, advanced placement, or both, by most
American colleges and universities. In 2004, 409 Fairview students took 597 tests in 16
subject areas.

Fairview currently offers the following AP courses:

  • AP Computer Science Java
  • AP Spanish 5
  • AP Language and Composition
  • AP Calculus AB
  • AP U.S. History IB
  • IB Physics II
  • AP French 5
  • AP German 5
  • AP Literature and Composition
  • AP Calculus BC
  • Chemistry II (prepares for AP and IB)
  • (prepares for AP and IB)
Following the completion of the above courses or other Fairview courses (usually IB
courses), students have taken AP exams in the following subject areas:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • English Language and Composition
  • French
  • Spanish
  • U.S. History
  • European History
  • Music
  • Calculus
  • Computer Science
  • English Literature and Composition
  • German
  • Physics
  • World History
  • Studio Art
  • Theory
In conjunction with the IB Program or alone, Fairview’s AP program offers an excellent
option for students seeking academic challenges. Many students take advantage of both
programs to meet their personal academic goals to maximize their college placement and
credit opportunities. Students need to consult with their teachers and counselors before
deciding on particular courses and exams.
