Chess is everywhere at Eisenhower!
Chess players are in every grade at Eisenhower, from casual players to students with trophies from state scholastic tournaments. Chess sets are in the library and many classrooms for indoor recess or choice time. Some students take chessclasses at school, or venture on to chess camps, private lessons, tournaments, and informal evening events around Boulder.
Lunch Club Chess: During the winter months, Mrs. Piirto offers chess at lunch clubs, 11:45 to 1:20 in the library during your lunch recess! The first club is 11/20, then on 12/4, 12/11, 12/18, 1/8, 1/15, 2/5, 2/12, the last club is 2/19.
Family Chess Knight: Jan 14, 6:30 to 8:30 pm – save the date! Parents and students (K-5) hear a short introduction to chess, play games, and participate or watch a simultaneous tournament. Look for flyers in Friday Folders or email Ms. Burkholder if you are interested or would like to help.
Chess Classes: After school chess classes at Eisenhower, grades 2-5, look for flyers in Friday Folders or on the TAG Bulletin Board:
-

-
Beginners Jan. 20 – Feb. 17;
-
Begin/Intermediate Feb. 24 – Mar.17;
-

Eisenhower Chess Team: For motivated 3rd, 4th or 5th graders, play tournament games against students from other schools. Team players do not need to be advanced, but do play touch-move, quiet games lasting up to 1 hour. Good sportsmanship is expected, you must sign up at least 2 weeks before the tournament and commit to playing. No fee but parent help is requested. Home games (Nov. 15 and Jan. 21) are a great way to start. Chess classes are not required for team players but are good practice. The blue flyer about Chess Class and Team was in Friday Folders in early October, or contact Ms. Burkholder for more information.
