Math @ Columbine

Math has been the focus of our school-wide improvement process for the last couple of years.    During this same timeframe, the District as a whole adopted new math materials.  At Columbine we use the district-adopted Investigations Math Model and supplement with Count Me In Too/Advantage Math.   Investigations is one of only two research-based math instruction methods in the country. You can learn more about these programs on the links by clicking on the links to the right.

One thing you will notice about math at many schools is that it isn't taught the way many of us learned.  The focus now is on higher level mathematical reasoning and concepts.  Studies show that transitioning to more difficult math concepts (algebra, trig, calculus) is easier if a "reasoning-based" foundation is set.  Our math program at Columbine is hands-on, employing manipulatives at every level to enhance learning.  Our balanced math approach includes games that focus on mental math skills which quickly develop number sense and fluency. Students are required and expected to explain and "show" their thinking with words and diagrams - not just provide the answer.  There is also the expectation that children share more than one way to get the answer so they broaden their thinking.  The end result is a math program which includes:

  • Computation
  • Problem Solving
  • Reasoning
  • Communication

As with other content areas at Columbine, we offer differentiated instruction.  In other words, student will be working on the same task, but at different levels.  For example, some students may be working on counting while others will be working on double digit addition.   Our materials and training allow for extension to varied ability levels.

As part of our math offerings, we have Challenge Math and Advanced Math.  Challenge math is a class that meets once a week and focus on logic, difficult math puzzles and advanced reasoning.  These classes are offered in 3rd-5th grade and are taught by community volunteers who are passionate about math.   In addition, we offer an Advanced Math class for 4th/5th grade students who would benefit from additional acceleration.

We're excited about our program and invite you to find out more.
