This course is designed for students reading at or above grade level. The course provides the opportunity for systematic silent reading. Students choose reading material for interest, information, pleasure, and enrichment.

This elective is designed to begin equipping young people with the acting skills necessary to succeed in stage productions. Students will learn acting skills, stage directions and vocabulary, study several scripts, and prepare and perform many scenes during class.

Applied Technology is a new and exciting class designed for hands-on learning. Students may select from over 75 hands-on projects in unique areas such as architecture, robotics, graphic arts/design, lasers, photography, satellite communications, engineering, CAD, inventions, microelectronics, or any of a dozen other fields of interest. A fee may be assessed for materials used.

Building on the sixth grade exploratory experience, students spend a full semester studying and using art elements and principles in composition and design. Drawing is emphasized as well as experiences in painting, sculpture, and ceramics. Students will become more aware of the arts of other cultures and the importance of art in their lives.

Band is for seventh and eighth grade students and emphasizes a balance between technical development and performance skills. This course provides an introduction to band literature, ensemble involvement, note and rhythm reading and a broad range of instrumentation. Separate bands are provided for each grade level. Students in a continuing band should be prepared to commit themselves for one full year.

Students will experience a wide range of software and hardware, giving them the knowledge and technical background to be proficient users of technology. Students will be able to be power users of word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, page layout, research software, the Internet and digital media. This course is a recommended prerequisite for all other computing courses.

Students will read models of outstanding poetry and prose. The major thrust will be an exploration of creative writing ability. Students will write poetry, stories, plays, descriptions, and other literary forms. They are free to experiment with ideas while learning to express these in various forms.

This class offers students the opportunity to use professional desktop publishing layout software to create reports, flyers, brochures, newsletters and our school yearbook. Students will use word processing, graphics, digital cameras, scanners and other tools to create professional looking products. Computing Power is a recommended prerequisite.

This one semester course provides experience in a wide range of media in the study of art elements and principles of design for the advanced art student. Using artists and art history, students explore various aspects of drawing, painting, methods, and techniques. Students will be expected to continue developing their skills and knowledge of two-dimensional art. Open to eighth grade students or seventh grade students with teacher recommendation.

This one semester course will cover different methods and materials used in the construction of three-dimensional forms such as casting, assemblage, carving, and modeling. The student will study how the piece looks from every point of view and also how it interacts with the empty space that surrounds it on all sides. This interaction is the essence of three-dimensional design that makes it a unique art form.

Students will explore the exciting world of the Internet and understand how it works. Students will have an account on a UNIX server and learn some of the operating system. They will also learn HTML and a variety of internet-related tools to build their own web pages. Internet and online related issues of copyright, privacy, virus protection, safe navigation and “netiquette” will also be discussed. Computing Power is a recommended prerequisite.

Learn how to type faster than you can write! This class will help you work faster, save time on your homework, and make your papers look neater! Students will learn to use the computer keyboard using the touch method. Emphasis is placed on developing correct typing techniques and improving speed and accuracy when producing documents. Students will have an opportunity to use keyboarding software and will be able to create documents for other classes.

Media Center aides have the opportunity to further develop their organizational skills, responsibility, and independence helping students and teachers in the library and workroom. They make and deliver copies and transparencies, and contribute to the maintenance of the library collection. Students are expected to be dependable and industrious. Eighth graders have priority and approval is required.

Become a media critic! If you like watching TV, listening to the radio, and reading newspapers and magazines, this class is for you! Creative, small group projects include studying propaganda tricks while creating an advertising campaign; reviewing TV shows and movies, effects of violence, and special effects; creating an animated flip book, and becoming a TV news broadcaster and/or DJ. Final projects include student-created videos, comic books, animated films, radio broadcasts, newspapers, magazines, or multi-media shows.

If you like to sing and perform, this is the class for you! This class is for both male and female voices. We learn vocal techniques, sing many styles of songs, and learn how to read music notation. Performances are held at school and in the community throughout the semester.

Students will design and produce multimedia presentations that incorporate text, graphics, sound, and animations. They will experience several software products, digital cameras, digital video cameras, CD, the Internet and possibly DVD technology. Computing Power is a recommended prerequisite.

If you love to act and sing, here’s a class for you! Famous musical theatre scenes involving dancing, singing, and acting will be studied, rehearsed, and performed. Vocal techniques and acting skills will be a major focus. Talent is not required--need only curiosity and a desire to learn!

Office aides serve as a valuable resource to the main office and the counseling office. They are involved with daily tasks necessary for the successful operation of the school. They must be dependable and industrious. An ability to relate well with other students, with adults, and with visitors is very important. Approval is required and eighth graders have priority.

Orchestra is a string-performing group where students experience technical training and opportunities for enrichment and development in individual and group musicianship. Students in continuing orchestra should be prepared to commit themselves for one full year.

One semester of physical education is required of all 7th and 8th grade students. Students may choose an additional semester as an elective. Physical education emphasizes fitness and development of basic movement skills. Emphasis is placed on building personal responsibility, good sportsmanship and leadership.

In this one-semester course students will be introduced to the properties of ceramic clay. The emphasis in this course is on hand building. Students will create functional and non-functional pieces and learn to finish them in a variety of ways. Craft projects will be interspersed in the semester with an emphasis on folk art of many cultures.

Do you want to sing and dance on stage? The Show Choir will study of a variety of music styles including pop, jazz, and show tunes and complete them with choreography. Performances are held throughout the semester.

Do you want to make a difference in your school? Students will learn leadership and team-building skills through active participation in a variety of exercises, games, and school projects. Students will gain additional skills in communication, decision-making, conflict resolution, and learn the importance of goal setting and follow through. Service learning is another important part of this class. Finally, attention is given to personal growth through feedback and reflection.

Standard: Students communicate in a world language while demonstrating literacy in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. (1) Students should listen to derive meaning from a variety of sources. (2) Students should speak for a variety of purposes and audiences. (3) Students should read and derive meaning from a variety of materials. (4) Students should write for a variety of purposes and audiences.
Proficiency in a foreign language is becoming increasingly important for all students in order to participate fully in a global community. While knowledge of a foreign language has traditionally been a part of college preparation, the multicultural experience gained through the study of another language greatly enriches all students. New techniques in second language acquisition make this study accessible to most students.
Foreign language study may begin in grade seven. Level 1A and Level 1B of a given language at the middle level are equivalent to Level l in high school. College preparatory students are encouraged to take a minimum of three levels in the same foreign language.
