The Angevine ESL program serves approximately 110 students, many of whom made their way to Colorado from around the world. The ESL program is structured primarily to meet the needs of our numerous students for whom Spanish is their native language. However, the ESL program also caters to students from across Asia and Eastern Europe, whose native tongues include everything from Hmong, Hindi, Farsi, Tibetan, Chinese and Indonesian to Bosnian. In the future, we will continually adapt the ESL program to meet the needs of students who speak native languages other than English.
Students who are just starting to learn English enroll in our Beginning ESL class for one class period each day (in place of a regular Language Arts class) and a Beginning ESL reading class. ESL students at the intermediate and advanced levels are eligible to enroll in our Alternative Language Arts program, which is taught in the form of a Writer's Workshop.
Once an ESL student's academic performance and/or assessments show that he or she is ready for advancement, teachers reassign the student to traditional English classes. After a student has been redesignated, we monitor him or her for success over the next 24 months, to ensure that the student has been properly placed.
All of our ESL students also enroll in math, science, physical education (PE) and elective classes that are taught in an all-English environment. If appropriate, ESL students have access to trained bilingual tutors for help in math and science classes.
