Description: The Intermediate Course is a primer for students to gain an understanding of how to safely operate a bicycle in a variety of situations.  It covers topics such as learning how to perform a bicycle safety check, helmet fit, rules of the road, and on-bike skills.   The traning gives students the opportunity to practice on-bike skills to ensure that they are equipped and capable of riding safely and legally.

Status: The BLAST Advisory Group has developed and implemented the three hour Intermediate Course.  The course has been successfully taught to 5th and 6th graders at six Boulder County schools.  The courses are presented by trained BLAST Instructors during physical education class with assistance from the class teacher.  Students are encouraged to bring their own bikes and helmets to the program.  Bikes and helmets are available for those in need.

Timeline: Funding for development of the curriculum comes from the BVSD Safe Routes to School program (three participating schools in Encouragement Grant and 20 participating schools in Bike Rack Project).    The Advisory Group aims to develop three products including the Intermediate Course which debuted in April, 2009.

1)  Short assembly of 20-40 minutes
2)  Intermediate course of 3 class hours (now available)
3)  Comprehensive proficiency unit of 7-10 class hours
