What’s New to the Open Enrollment Process This Year?

To provide better service to our families, the Open Enrollment Office has made three minor changes for the 2012-2013 Open Enrollment season beginning this November.  Anticipated benefits of these changes are faster turnaround times, more complete information sooner, and a simplified efficient process.

  1.    BVSD will now send a “Notification of Acceptance” so parents don’t have to remember to accept  a seat they applied for or risk losing it.  Be sure to tell us if you want to decline a seat, if the situation has changed for your family and you would like to keep your student(s) at the current school.

  2.   We have eliminated the second lottery as an unnecessary step to ensure that parents will not have to wait weeks for notification about waitlist placement. Instead, after the lottery we’ll move to our waitlist period a month and a half earlier than last year.  By early February we can provide a waitlist position for any student that did not get a seat in a school they applied to, so you can make school-based decisions earlier.

  3.  We have improved overall efficiency by removing the fourth choice. On average, only 10 seats a year district-wide fill via a fourth choice application in Open Enrollment.

 About Open Enrollment

The Board of Education supports a variety of high quality educational programs. Students may:

·         attend their district designated neighborhood school (based on home address)
·         open enroll to another neighborhood school
·         open enroll in a focus school (meets BVSD standards but may have a different curriculum or philosophy)
·         open enroll in a charter school (an independent school) within the district
Through open enrollment parents/guardians may choose to enroll in a school outside of their neighborhood as long as there is sufficient programming, staff and space at the school. Parents/guardians who reside outside BVSD may open enroll their children into this district -- currently about 800 of Boulder Valley's students are from neighboring districts.

 Special Events at the Schools

During BVSD's open enrollment application period each year, our schools hold special events that allow prospective students and their parents to visit the school and learn more about its programs. See left column for links to the various event schedules. Note ~ Multi-level schools (such as K-12, K-8 and middle-senior high schools) are included in these lists, also, because some of them have different event schedules for their K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 levels.

Important Note about Arapahoe Ridge High School

Arapahoe Ridge High School will no longer accept 9th grade students beginning with the 2008-09 school-year. Arapahoe Ridge High School is a career focus high school for 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. After a student has experienced a traditional high school and all that the high school has to offer for 9th grade and then decides that they would rather attend a career focus high school, they may apply for a transfer beginning with their 10th grade by contacting Arapahoe Ridge High School at 720-561-5231.

Study Of BVSD's Open Enrollment System

Although Open Enrollment has existed in BVSD since 1961, it did not truly take hold until the mid-1990s. As more parents availed themselves of this option, it became the focal point of some controversy. The authors undertook this study to systematically describe and evaluate the open enrollment system as it now exists in Boulder Valley School District, and to provide information to BVSD officials, the School Board, and the public. On October 24th, 2000, the authors presented the results of this study, in report form, to the BVSD Board of Education. The executive summary and recommendations can be found via the link below.
