Baile Folkorico dancers at a prior Steps for Literacy rally on Pearl Street Mall

Casey's sixth annual Steps for Literacy rally and fundraiser is Friday

Author Laura Resau to speak while Casey Middle School students rally for literacy on Boulder's Pearl Street Mall

Boulder – Casey Middle School students will walk from their school to the Pearl Street Mall at 2:10 p.m. this Friday, May 9, to rally for the cause of literacy. Kids will cheer and hand out fliers promoting literacy. Baile Folkorico will dance in their beautiful costumes. Casey's Jazz Band and Guitar Club will perform, and prize-winning author Laura Resau will speak.

Laura Resau's debut young adult novel, What the Moon Saw, is an Americas Award Honor Book, a Junior Library Guild Selection, a Colorado Book Award Winner, and has received many other honors. Resau's second novel, Red Glass-- also set in rural Mexico and dealing with the timely topic of immigration - won the IRA Young Adult Fiction Award and the Americas Award. Resau lived in the Mixtec region of Oaxaca, Mexico, for two years as an English teacher and anthropologist. She now lives in Fort Collins, Colorado, where she writes and teaches English as a Second Language. She is donating a portion of her royalties to indigenous rights organizations in Latin America.

And the afternoon rally is just the beginning!

The celebration continues on into the evening with a school community potluck, music performances by the Casey Mariachi Band and the Casey Choir, poetry readings by students and guest poet Jack Collum, plus drawings for great prizes. A SILENT AUCTION will be held 5:30-7:00 p.m. at the school library, too.

Steps for Literacy highlights Casey to the Boulder community and brings needed funds to the school through the silent auction and book fair. With money raised at the event, Casey will purchase books and classroom supplies to help children learn and succeed in school. Local businesses interested in making donations may call 303-245-5948 for more information.
