BOULDER: Students from Boulder Valley School District did very well at the Regional and National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards this year. Four students won a National award, including two gold medal winners. The gold medalists and their teachers will be honored at a National Awards Ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 2.

BVSD winners include:
Kai Shen, 7th grade, Southern Hills Middle School: Gold medal
Rebecca Shu, 12th grade, Peak to Peak K-12 Charter School: Gold medal

Blythe Feeney, 12th grade, Boulder High School: Silver medal
Fiona Freeman-Grundei, 12th grade, Peak to Peak K-12 Charter School: Silver medal

Kai Shen, the only middle school student in Colorado to earn a gold medal in the National Contest, created "Armordillo," (pictured) in the sculpture category. View the full list of Colorado's 2016 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards National Medalists.

BVSD student artists also won 63 awards in the regional Scholastic Art competition this year. A complete list of regional winners can be found here.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is coordinated by The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a not-for-profit organization. Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have recognized the vision, ingenuity, and talent of our nation’s youth, and provided opportunities for creative teens to be celebrated. Each year, increasing numbers of teens participate in the program - young artists and writers, filmmakers and photographers, poets, and sculptors, along with countless educators who support and encourage the creative process. This year, nearly 320,000 works of art and writing were submitted. Only the top 1 percent were recognized at the national level. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers.
