BOULDER – On Sunday, May 18, six Boulder High School students won the Leader’s Challenge grand prize at the program’s year-end convention for students from around Colorado. Forty-two high school teams presented their final projects to hundreds of spectators. The Boulder High project was the grand prize winner.
A group of six juniors at Boulder High School have been involved in this year-long community service organization. These civic-minded students volunteered their time throughout their busy year at school. They attended weekly meetings and were involved in monthly philanthropic projects. All six were required to organize a year-end project incorporating the skills and values that they learned during the year.
Their project was a benefit concert that they organized at downtown Boulder’s Fox Theater on Mother’s Day, May 11, to benefit the Lost Girls of Sudan. The girls from Sudan, most of who are from Boulder High, sang and danced traditional Sudanese songs in the opening act. A total of $2500 was raised to assist in the education of these ladies from Sudan.
The six Boulder High students are Sofia Laguna, Megan Schwartz, Sarah Waldner, Vince Szilagyi, Megan King and Austin Reed. The opening was followed by four bands who donated their time and talents to help the cause. The bands were "Tyler Ward", "Saving Verona", “The Autumn Film" and Boulder High's own "Mohney and the Groovemachine".
