LAFAYETTE, CO: It takes a village to raise a child AND to make 5000 tamales, which is exactly what 60 volunteers plan to do at BVSD's Pioneer Bilingual Elementary School (101 E. Baseline) 7:00-11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 11. It's their second annual Tamale Sale to raise funds for the school.
"The tamale sale started as a community event - bringing our parents together to work hard and get to know each other by sharing a cultural activity," said Amy Houlihan, Pioneer PTA President. "This year our goal is to have fun, work hard, continue to grow relationships, and to also earn a little money for the PTA."
"It is amazing how much work it takes to make 5,000 tamales," added Houlihan, "but it is a lot of fun. We play salsa music and provide lots of food for the volunteer parents. I try to get the parents to take dancing breaks every once in awhile just to keep them going. The parents had a ball last year and we anticipate even more volunteer help this year. Parents don't want to miss out on the fun!"
Media are invited to film, photo and interview tamale makers at the school between 8:00-10:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
Pioneer Parent Event organizers who will be on site are: Jen Grant, Amy Houlihan and Kathleen Marr. Spanish speaking organizers: George Alonso, Rita Nevarez, and Delfi Silva, who provides the recipe and overall "tamale qulaity control"
Sponsors of Pioneer's tamale sale include KT's bbq, Aldamas, Los Alamos, Red Bird Chicken, King Soopers, Starbucks, Big Daddy's Bagels, Dominoes Pizza and Chick Fil-a.
