Robert Hammond Appointed CDE Deputy Commissioner

Current BVSD Chief Operations Officer Robert Hammond has been appointed the new Deputy Commissioner at CDE

BOULDER, CO—Colorado Department of Education Commissioner Dwight Jones today announced the appointment of Robert Hammond as Deputy Commissioner.

Hammond is currently the Chief Operations Officer for the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD). He will replace Karen Mock, who announced her retirement recently. Hammond will start this summer; no later than July 1.

In Boulder, Hammond is responsible for administration and operations for a school district that serves 28,490 students. Hammond serves as Chief Financial Officer and oversees human resources, information technology, operations, procurement, bond construction and coordination of district legislative activities.

“Mr. Hammond’s experience with financial management and human resource functions, along with his history in bringing sustainable change, make him an ideal fit for this position,” said Commissioner Jones. “Mr. Hammond finds a way to improve the quality of every system he touches and his focus on customer service matches well with the department’s new goal to support and serve all school districts. The department will benefit immensely from his outstanding leadership skills.”

As Deputy Commissioner at CDE, Hammond will oversee the management and operations of the department, federal programs, finance, management services, state library, professional licensure, information management and communications.

“During his tenure, Robert established a strong structure of sound budgeting, fiscal oversight and financial policymaking that has underpinned the very high academic achievement of our district. I will miss him but I congratulate both Robert and CDE on his appointment,” stated BVSD superintendent Chris King.

Hammond brings 20 years of K-12 educational leadership in the roles of chief operations officer, associate superintendent and division director of operations. He also worked in the banking industry and as a city manager and assistant city manager in Kansas, Iowa and Oklahoma.
