Quid Novi?  What's New?
 
Over 1500 students of Latin and Greek from 33 states, the United Kingdom and Ontario, spent July 25-30 in Richmond, Kentucky, competing at the 58th Annual National Junior Classical League Convention. A Colorado delegation of 17 students and two sponsors attended. Eleven of the students were from Fairview HS. This year's convention theme was: "bene legere saecla vincere" which translates to "To read well is to conquer the ages."  - Isaac Flagg, 19th Century Classicist  
 
Leading the delegation were Latin teachers Lynn Gibert of Fairview and Jesse Vader of Cherokee Trail. Each day began with breakfast at 6:30 a.m. and ended with Call to Rooms at 12:45 a.m.

"It is an exhausting, but exhilarating pace," noted Katt Bragg, a junior at Fairview.

Students read, write, speak, and breathe Latin for the entire week. They take tests in Latin and Greek language and culture, compete in Performing Arts and Graphic Arts events, as well as Olympika contests. Students also attend a variety of interesting Colloquia and compete in a quiz bowl competition known as "Certamen" (pronounced care-tah-men). Each day there is a General Assembly with Spirit contests for small, medium, and large states. Students at the convention dress for various themed days such as Post it to the Purple and Gold (NJCL colors), Kentucky Fried Classics, and A Day in Old Rome.

Mary Rhodes of Fairview, who won 13 first place ribbons at the Colorado State Latin Convention, was awarded a $300.00 scholarship to attend Nationals.
