Students from Lafayette Elementary have been doing something right! They have learned how to work as a team, write a script, build props and put on a skit that wowed the judges at the State Destination ImagiNation Competition in Denver in April. All the long hours of hard work paid off for them as they headed to the Destination ImagiNation Global Finals May 20-24 in Knoxville, TN. The seven-member team, HAIRlarious, tied for 20th place out of 80 teams in their division. It was a wonderful learning experience for the entire team.
The team’s members from Lafayette Elementary are fourth grader Lily Weekly and fifth graders Jaryd Benedict, Shannon Garland, Kristen Hensley, Julia Olsen, Jungkar Ombadykow and Tyger Roch. Kristen and Julia have been to the Destination ImagiNation Global Finals before. This is the second year in a row that Lafayette Elementary has sent a team to the DI Global Finals. Lafayette Elementary is the only BVSD elementary school to qualify a team for DI Global Finals this year.
Destination ImagiNation consists of teams of elementary school through college students working together to create and solve a variety of challenges. There are a variety of challenges such as writing and performing a skit, designing and creating wood and glue structures in addition to the instant challenges. Destination ImagiNation is the world’s largest all volunteer program designed to teach creative and critical thinking, presentation skills, problem solving and teamwork.
