The seeds for this celebration were planted months ago ...
High school students studying greenhouse management joined forces with school gardens throughout the district to raise a crop of zucchinis for school lunch. On Wednesday, Sept. 14, these zucchinis will be served for lunches throughout BVSD as part of the celebration of "Colorado Proud Day."
The project began in May when CTEC (Career and Technical Education Center) students got the zucchini plants started in their greenhouse. Those seedlings were then given to elementary schools for their students to plant in the school gardens. Throughout the summer, the plants were cared for by students, parents and Garden to the Table program staff.
In addition to the benefits of students learning how to grow their own food, this initiative also address the dual issues of food security and education by providing healthy, locally grown produce on school campuses to be available in school lunches.
It has been a collaboration between the Boulder Career and Technical Education Center's Greenhouse Management Program and FFA Chapter, the Growe Foundation Garden to the Table Program, and the BVSD School Food Project.
