BOULDER-Ben Alpert, Thomas Davids, Chris Guthrie, and Charles Xu, students from Fairview High School were invited to take the prestigious USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) this year. Only two other Colorado high school students qualified to write the USAMO. Each year more than 300,000 students from around the country participate in the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) series of exams which lead to the selection of the USA Mathematical Olympiad Team.
In addition, Fairview students ranked among the best in Colorado in the AMC 12 and AMC 10 exams in 2008. In the AMC 12, seven Fairview students placed among the top ten in Colorado: Marshall Carpenter (third place), Thomas Davids, (fourth place), Vicky Li (fifth place), Mutian Yao (sixth place), Jirui Qin (seventh place), Victor Li (eighth place), and Norris Xu (eighth place).
In the AMC 10 exam, three Fairview students ranked among the top four in Colorado: Ben Alpert (first place), Charles Xu (second place), and Chris Guthrie (fourth place).
