BVSD Awarded $500,000 Grant to Connect Youth to Community Resources

(Boulder, CO) Boulder Valley School District’s new Community Access Mentoring Program (CAM) is up and running at Casey Middle School and Manhattan School of Arts and Academics.  Dr. Jan Hittelman, a local psychologist, well known for his expertise in adolescent psychology and program development, designed this unique program.  Dr. Hittelman and BVSD’s Superintendent, Dr. Chris King, began working together in 2007 on a vision to create connections for middle school students to after-school and summer programs. Research shows that participation in structured after school activities positively impacts a wide range of adolescent risk factors, as well as overall academic success. After receiving a three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the Community Access Mentoring Program was recently launched.

The program will begin serving students at Casey and Manhattan Middle Schools by the end of May.  CAM is recruiting volunteer mentors, referred to as “Access Coaches,” who will serve students at both of these pilot schools. The program will eventually serve students at all BVSD Middle Schools.

CAM is currently recruiting mentors. If you are interested in learning more about the program, or becoming a volunteer, please contact Dr. Patti Ashley, Program Coordinator at 720-203-6844 or patti.ashley@bvsd.org.
