BOULDER: Eighth-grade students at Casey Middle School are teaching elementary students what they learned from local poet Jack Collom about writing poetry.
These eighth graders have been writing poetry with Jack Collom over the last four months. As part of the community service component of the Youth Opportunities Advisory Board (YOAB) grant that brought Jack to Casey, about 30 students volunteered to lead poetry writing workshops in local elementary classrooms. They have led several workshops so far this month, with the last few taking place tomorrow and Friday.
In the workshops, the eighth-grade "teachers" model the particular type of poetry form, give students time to write, and then lead the elementary writers in a sharing session. The eighth graders will also take the poetry and type it up into a book every child can take home.
