Graduation Requirements and The New Century Graduate

The Boulder Valley School District offers a comprehensive curriculum that reflects the vision of the New Century Graduate.  Graduation requirements and multiple courses have been carefully selected to provide students opportunities to successfully participate in a wide range of opportunities after high school.  Course choices range from rigorous college level course work in the core academic areas to elective choices designed to spark interests and develop talents.  Many students find the beginning of lifelong interests as well as career paths through our course offerings.

Careful planning is part of a successful school experience and this planning begins as early as middle school.  Students and their parents are encouragted to study the Boulder Valley School District graduation requirements and the course offerings from each Boulder Valley School, to plan and choose wisely those courses to meet the challenges of the New Century Graduate.

Correspondence Classes

Students can only earn credit via correspondence classes for up to 15 credits toward graduation, and all correspondence classes must be transcripted as letter grades.  Credit will only be awarded from accredited correspondence schools (Board Regulation JECD-R).

Credit for Activities/Athletics

A maximum of 10 of the 15 physical education credits may be waived* based on participation in comparable school activities (i.e., two credits may be waived* for each CHSAA approved sport successfully completed or two credits may be waived* for each season of marching band successfully completed) or comparable activities outside the school program (i.e., one credit may be waived* for each supervised activity that is at a sophisticated and competitive skill level as determined by the building principal).

*Credit will not be granted for school or outside activities when they are used for waiving of physical education credits.  Students are required to take 220 units to fulfill the graduation requirements.

College Admissions Requirements

The Colorado Commission on Higher Education (CCHE) establishes Higher Education Admissions Requirements (HEAR). These requirements specify the courses students need to successfully complete in high school, primarily in the areas of English, mathematics, natural and physical sciences, world language, and social science to qualify for admission to a public four-year college or university in Colorado including, the University of Colorado, Colorado State University, University of Northern Colorado, Colorado School of Mines, Metro State, Fort Lewis, Adams State, Western State and Mesa State. The higher education requirements (HEAR) do not apply to community colleges which have open enrollment  policies meaning that students applying to these schools do not need to meet the admission requirements outlined below.  There are two phases of implementation for the HEAR requirements:  Phase 1 for students graduating in 2008-09 and Phase 2 for students graduating in 2010 and beyond. (see Graduation Requirements)

For the most current information, it is suggested that students and parents consult the school counselor, a college handbook, or www.CollegeInColorado.org for valuable information, including financial and scholarship information.
