Offering a Class for Educators?

If you intend to offer a class for BVSD educators that provides them with a recognized certificate of completion, this page gives you access to some critical information and forms.

 Acceptible Evidence of Credit Earned

There are three types of activities for which certificates are generated through Curriculum and Instruction and are considered acceptable evidence by the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) for relicensing.

  • Inservice Education - Inservice activities must receive approval through Curriculum and Instruction, or other appropriate program directors - LLSS, SpEd, SAPP, Superintendent's Office, etc.  For each inservice activity completed, you will need to supply a statement on your application and explain how the activity is related to the Colorado Professional Education Standards.
  • Involvement in School Reform - Documentation can be in the form of a letter or certificate.  Attendance records, reports or products will be required.  Evidence should be in the form of reports, materials, or products developed.  A building principal is responsible for providing documentation to staff members who actively participate in these kinds of activities at the school level, certificates for these activities will be generated through the participating school.  A district administrator is responsible for providing documentation to staff members who actively participate in these activities at the district level, certificates for these activities will be generated through Curriculum and Instruction.  Activities may include, but are not limited to, services in local accountability and reform efforts, or curriculum, standards, and assessment development.
  • Ongoing Professional Development -  Staff members who serve as Induction mentors will receive documentation from Curriculum and Instruction. Staff members who serve as mentors for building programs will receive documentation from the principal.  Documentation may be in the form of a certificate or letter.  Evidence of completion of professional development experience may be in the form of publications or research produced, copies of national certification, transcripts, testimonials, or verfication by supervisors.  These certficates are generated through your school office for activities at your school.  A mentor log or journal may be used to verify contact hours earned.  Certificates for teachers must indicate the exact amount of time they have participated, not the length of the activity.  District wide activity certificates are generated through Curriculum and Instruction.  Activities may include, but are not limited to: attendance or presentation at professional conferences; service on state-wide or national educational task forces or boards; professional research and publication, supervision of student teachers, or intern; mentorships, pursuit of national educator certification; professional, technical or occupational training.

As has always been the case, applicants who renew their Colorado Professional Licenses must submit documentation of having completed 6-semester hours or 90-clock hours of professional development activities.

Note:  There is a $25 certificate fee per class for non-BVSD participants, payable to Boulder Valley School District and should be collected prior or at the first class by the instructor then sent to Ann Hamilton, Curriculum, Assessment and Instruction (CAI).

Classes may also be set up to offer college or university credit.  The participants who opt for this should, at the end of the activity, contact the college or university and request a copy of their transcript as proof of completion for Human Resources and/or CDE.  NO certificate will be issued from BVSD for these activities.

 Inservice Education Credit Proposal

To offer an activity for credit, please submit a Proposal for Inservice Education Credit at least 30 days prior to the start of the activity.  This form is used to set up a district approved class/workshop for CDE hours, BVSD salary credit, or both.  It should be completed in detail and returned to Lucy Simpson, Curriculum, Assessment & Instruction, or appropriate departmental administrative assistant.

When considering offering an activity for credit, make sure enough time is scheduled in the activity to allow for the correct amount of hours/credits to be issued.  For example, if salary credit is offered, outside classroom hours must equal in classroom hours.  A 7.5 hour class requires outside class time to also be 7.5 hours in order to receive .5 salary credits, etc.  The work time outside the classroom must be documented and turned in to the instructor.

Once the completed form is received, it is then approved by a district administrator.  The facilitator or contact person will be notified of approval or denial.

The activity is entered into AVATAR (Professional Development Management System), according to information supplied per the course proposal.

Upon completion of the activity, attendance is confirmed and credits issued.  Participants may log in to AVATAR, complete a class evaluation (if applicable), then print a certificate.
