Book Adoption Update The curriculum library is filling up with boxes and boxes of books for you all to review. I know many of you are receiving samples, too. The rumor mill is already spinning so I thought I would let you know what I do. First, the allotment for textbooks hasn’t been raised (even for inflation) since our last adoption. Seven years ago we spent $1.5 million over two years. Elective courses were funded in the second year. The prices of books have gone up 50% since then. We currently have access to $700,000. You can immediately see the dilemma. I have requested additional funds, but even these probably won’t cover the estimated 2.6 million that we need to fully cover the costs. As departments, you might begin thinking about what is a priority now, what can we put off for a year, and what can we continue to reuse. Final allocations have not been set at this point. The more we can come to consensus on the resources that we choose for our core courses the more money we will save in ordering. If you have questions or ideas about how we should manage the shortfall, I would appreciate your input. |
