Benefits of CSH

Healthy, properly nourished students who feel safe are better able to concentrate on their work, attend school on a regular basis, and achieve academically in school and in life. Over time, the data show that health risks and low levels of resiliency assets—the ability to be resilient in the face of challenges generally associated with risky behavior—have a negative effect on a school's ability to help students raise test scores (Hanson & Austin, 2003). Schools in which the mental, social, and physical health of students is protected have been able to significantly increase achievement (Marx, 2003).

Coordinated School Health Partnership

A committee of community members, parents, teachers and students meets five times per academic year to coordinate health-related efforts within the BVSD school district and between the district and the community.  Committee membership is open to all BVSD residents.

A CSHP Steering Committee comprised of representatives from the seven CSH component areas meets five times per academic year in alternating months with the CSHP to review CSHP input and make formal recommendations to the School District.

Subcommittees of CSHP meet to work on specific component area needs (e.g., the Health Education Policies and Recommendations Committee).

School Health Teams

At the school building level, new school health teams or existing committees made up of teachers, counselors, principals, “specials,” parents and others assess their school to determine how well the school is addressing the health needs of students and staff. By using the School Health Index, the team assesses the strengths and weaknesses of the eight components of CSH, then creates a long-term school health improvement plan for addressing the highest priority needs. Each school’s health team meets regularly and takes the lead role in carrying out the school’s plan. Each health team assigns a leader to work with the district level team and the Coordinated School Health Partnership to communicate needs and coordinate efforts.
