Showing a Return on Your Investment A report to the community on the status of the 1998 bond issue projects Boulder Valley School District – January 2004
In November 1998, voters in the Boulder Valley School District approved a $64 million bond issue for new construction, renovation and repairs in nearly all district schools. Five years later, we are pleased to report that the projects are complete.
When BVSD asked for voter approval of the bond issue, the goal was to make the most efficient use of the bond money possible. The intent was to respond to enrollment changes, make badly needed repairs to improve safety and efficiency of buildings, and to improve accessibility and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). We believe we have accomplished those goals through this $64 million investment. In total, the district completed 561 projects in 50 buildings and opened two new schools in Broomfield and Superior. As the projects have been completed, students and staff have appreciated the benefits of the new schools, additional classrooms, interior renovations, and upgrades to mechanical, electrical and technology systems.
Some enhancements to the original bond program were made possible due to higher-than-forecast interest earnings, Board reallocation of funds originally budgeted for a classroom addition at Monarch K-8, and supplemental money from the cities of Broomfield and Louisville. These enhancements included enlarged gyms at Broomfield High and Louisville Elementary, plus funding the facilities and equipment for the pre-engineering program at Angevine Middle School and Centaurus High School.
Technology enhancements included a new applied technology center at Boulder High School. The lab focuses on video production, communications, and design. New equipment for vocational programs and building modifications to accommodate the equipment were made at Arapahoe Ridge High School and the Boulder Valley Technical Education Center (TEC). Data wiring was installed in all classrooms throughout the district to provide better access to technology for instruction. Telephones with voice mail enhancement were installed in classrooms at all levels throughout the district as a communication tool for teachers.
ADA projects were specific to each school and included such projects as elevators, stair lifts, ramps, restroom modifications, accessible drinking fountains and fire alarm strobe indicators for hearing impaired students.
The school district appreciates the support of our community to provide the opportunity to enhance the learning environment for our students and staff.
Following is a summary of how the bond funds were used at each school district location.
