What is the Adopt-a-Computer Program?
 
BVSD IT's Adopt-a-Computer Program allows BVSD employees and students to purchase refurbished desktop PC computers (pictured above) for home use at a very low purchase price and significantly decreases BVSD’s recycling expenses.
 
Please Note: Only desktop PC computers are available through this program. NO laptops, flat screen monitors, Macs, netbooks, or printers are available.
 
How do I adopt a computer?
 
We have simplified the Adopt-a-Computer process. Please do not submit an IT Service Request to adopt a computer. Here is the new process:

Please Note: We will have plenty of computers available at the IT Store West location based on previous demand, but be aware that computers are now available on a first-come first-served basis only. We no longer accept reservations with IT Service Requests.

How much do the computers cost?

  • Employee Purchase Price: $50
  • Student Purchase Price: $25

What does my desktop computer purchase include?
  • HP dx5150 desktop computer (1.8GHz CPU/1GB RAM/40GB HD/DVD Player/CD-RW)
  • Microsoft Windows XP Pro and OpenOffice (Microsoft Office is not installed.) 
  • 17-inch CRT monitor with VGA cord
  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • 2 computer/monitor power cords
What software is installed? What are the hardware specifications?
What is IT's 10-point Adopt-a-Computer certification process?
  1. Verification that the motherboard is in good condition.
  2. Verification that 1GB of RAM has been installed.
  3. Cleaning the inside of the PC.
  4. Reimaging the desktop for home use.
  5. Installing Open Office and BVSD Adopt-a-Computer standard software.
  6. Testing the DVD/CD-RW drive.
  7. Verification of monitor power, color, contrast, and video signal.
  8. Verification of mouse functionality.
  9. Verification of keyboard functionality.
  10. Cleaning the outside of the desktop, including the PC, monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
