 School Improvement Goals 2008-2009

 I.  School SMART Goal for Achievement:
Students at Southern Hills Middle School will improve their achievement in reading over baseline data and over time.  Using 2007 CSAP data as the baseline, all students will achieve one years growth in one years time as measured by the Weighted Index Mean Scores on CSAP in the years 2008, 2009 and 2010.

II.  School SMART Goal for Equity:
As a cohort group, Special Education students at Southern Hills Middle School will improve their achievement in math over baseline data and over time. Using the 2007 score of 79 as the baseline, the Special Education cohort group of students will achieve a Weighted Index Score gain of 5 points each of the next three years in math (2008, 2009, 2010).  Using growth model data as an additional measure, this same cohort will achieve a 16 point (two standard errors) increase during this same three year period.

III.  School SMART Goal for Climate:
Increase, over baseline data and over time, student’s positive perception of student-to-student relationship as measured by the Student Climate Survey.  Specifically, the goal for the staff at Southern Hills Middle School to promote/support improved student-to-student and student-to-staff trust relationships throughout the school.  This goal will be centered on increases of five percentage points on seven predetermined items from the 2008 Student Climate Survey (questions - #22, 29, 31, 39 and 41) which address this issue.  SHMS will also focus on four questions which the community feels are at the heart of building trust with students (#11, 16, 21 and 46) as a part of this three year goal.

#11.  I believe our school rules are consistently enforced.
#16.  At school, I feel trusted by adults.
#21.  At school, I get the help that I need on non-academic issues.
#22.  Other students help if they see someone being bullied or harassed.
#29.  At school, I have not said hurtful things to other students.
#31.  I have not seen students of different cultural, racial or ethnic backgrounds made fun
               of at school.
#39.  At school, I have not heard students threaten to hurt someone or take their things.
#41.  In class, other students have not embarrassed me.
#46.  Adults help if they see someone being bullied or harassed.

IV.  School SMART Goal for School Operations:

During 2008-2009 school year, Southern Hills Middle School will be undergoing significant construction and remodeling as a Phase I project within the overall BVSD Bond Program.  Our priority challenge will be to maintain the safe flow of students during evacuation and/or exiting procedures amidst ever changing construction barriers on the campus. Southern Hills will demonstrate increased efficiency in organizing the flow of students on a daily basis to facilitate the goal of expediting evacuation and campus-wide staging of students.  For 2008-2009 SHMS will achieve total building evacuation in two minutes and full campus staging to designated sites within one and a half minute, for a total of three and a half minutes.
